Al served in the US Navy, detached to the Marine Corp, and served as a Corpman in Vietnam. He returned to Huntington and worked at St. Mary’s Hospital before being hired in the first group of STOP Ambulance Service. He was hired by the Huntington Police Department as an officer and worked patrol, traffic and the juvenile bureau before he retired as a Sargeant after 27 years of service. Throughout his service in Vietnam and HPD, he delivered 31 babies. He always said that his favorite assignment was riding the Harleys for the Traffic Unit where they gave you a paycheck for riding a motorcycle. After retirement, he served in several different positions including “assistant manager” of the Wiles car wash for 25 years, Bailiff for Wayne County Domestic Court under Judge Steve Lewis and Shawn Maynard, and PRO Officer at Tolsia High School. Al was a member of the Wayne United Methodist Church where he faithful served in the Wayne Food Pantry. Al was an avid motorcyclist. He started on dirt bikes and fell in love with the racetracks and trails. He moved to Harleys and kept one in his garage until his passing. He was a charter member of the Blue Knights III and previously served as vice president and currently as a director. He loved attending meetings where he always enjoyed a cigar with Johnny Evans. He enjoyed riding with club members and always said that the “wind made you feel alive”. He was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police Gold Star 65. Visitation for Al will be at Reger Funeral Home from 11:00-1:00 pm on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 with a Memorial Service, conducted by Steve Hensley, at 1:00 pm in the Reger Funeral Chapel. If you have a motorcycle, the family encourages you to ride to the memorial. Al would have enjoyed hearing the engines and seeing the bikes. Bring your favorite “Al Hurt” story and share with each other and during the service. Al met lots of people throughout his life, but his long-time friends, Randall Wall, Randy Wiles, Neil Bouchillon, BJ Wamsley, Larry Zimmerman, Vern Casey, Tom McCallister, Matt Martin, Jeff Ash and Johnny Evans will forever be included in our family. We also want to acknowledge our “Briarwood” neighbors who have done so much for us since Al’s illness began. We couldn’t have made it without you!!! We are indebted to the Oncology Department at Cabell Huntington Hospital and Dr. Zhu and the MD Anderson staff in Houston Texas for their care during his illness. We ask that, in lieu of flowers, you make a donation in memory of Al Hurt, to one of the following: Ride with Cops Foundation, P. O. Box 737, Huntington, WV 25712 or Wayne Methodist Food Pantry, P. O. Box 246, Wayne, WV 25570.
