Major Dan Kenneth Hastings of Huntington West Virginia passed away May 4, 2026 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington West Virginia. He was born June 14, 1933 in South Point, Ohio. Dan was raised by his aunt, Ethel Virginia Shaffer Burns and uncle, John Henry Burns. Dan was preceded in death by his daughter, Alisa Deann Hastings.
Survivors include his son, Mark Steven Hastings and granddaughters, Makayla Danielle Hastings and Anna Marie Hastings; his loving and devoted partner of 40 years, Jane Montsinger; her daughters Lisa Rubio and husband Jose Rubio; Catherine Carter Parsons and husband Ed Parsons; Meredith Berger and husband Jon Berger; and grandchildren Carter Rubio, Megan Parsons, Michael Parsons, Molly Berger and Maggie Berger.
Dan, graduated from Vinson High School in Huntington, West Virginia where he excelled in football and was the senior class president. He attended SMU in Texas on a football scholarship, and upon graduation from SMU in 1957, he joined the US Air Force for a career as a pilot of 21 years, retiring in 1978. During his career he flew B47 six engine bombers and B57 twin engine dive bombers. He was stationed on many bases including Laredo Air Force Base in Laredo Texas; Lockbourne Air Force Base in Columbus Ohio; Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines with a two year tour in Vietnam; and Hill Air Force Base in Utah.
A celebration of life will be held at the Reger Funeral Home, 1242 Adams Ave., Huntington, WV on Sunday, May 24, 2026. Visitation will be at 1 pm and the service at 2 pm. The family would like to thank Dan’s caregivers and Hospice of Huntington for their help and compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church in Huntington, West Virginia.
